30 May 2013 – Genesis Oil & Gas Services Ltd (“Genesis”), a wholly owned Ghanaian oilfield services company, has begun construction of its Oilfield Logistics Base in Takoradi, in Ghana’s Western Region. The logistics base, which will be set on a 43 acre (174,000 m2) land parcel, is being developed to help address the shortage of adequate managed storage and logistics facilities for upstream operators and service companies operating from Takoradi.
Genesis is making a $10 million investment to develop the first phase of the logistics base, which will provide an API specification pipe yard, a tubular inspection hall, modern warehousing, reinforced fabrication and assembly areas, office space and recreational areas over a total surface area of 20 acres (81,000m2). Phase 1 of the base is expected to be completed by Q4 2013 with the site becoming operational in the first quarter of 2014.
The Oilfield Logistics Base will allow Genesis and its partners to offer a unique infrastructure-backed services offering to Ghana’s oil and gas industry, including:
– Managed OCTG supply and customised tubular management services: including yard management services, onshore rig ready and rig return inspections, customer inventory management and warehousing, and transportation services to/from client sites. This customised tubular supply and services offering has been proven to enhance well reliability, improve operational flexibility and reduce costs for upstream operators around the world.
– Machining and Fabrication services: precision engineering and machining using state of the art Computer Numerical Control equipment as well as conventional machines for welding, non-destructive testing, horizontal boring and surface treatment of oilfield equipment.
– Enclosed storage of oilfield equipment: in modern warehousing with up to 12,500m2 of available floor space, split into smaller units, with palletised storage areas for a wide range of equipment including drill bits, collars, OCTG accessories, valves, and flanges
– Outdoor storage and work areas: with a storage footprint of over 30,000m2, reinforced with a concrete finish to withstand extreme loads during fabrication and assembly operations.
– Provision of lifting and handling equipment, with HSE trained operators
With all local authority planning approval in place, construction has begun with land stabilizing and major earthworks – including complete clearing of vegetation and excavation of unsuitable material, to be replaced by laterite. The construction of the site’s drainage system is also being completed as part of the earthworks.
Following a competitive tender process, David Walter Limited was selected as the primary contractor for the project, with project management delivered jointly by Conti Infrastructure Ghana Limited and MSAO Company Limited.
Construction of Oilfield Logistics Base begins at Genesis’ 43-acre (174,000m2) site in Takoradi
Bridging the Infrastructure Gap
Genesis recognizes that with Ghana’s oil industry expanding as new field developments are brought on-stream, it is critical that the current infrastructure gap is bridged as quickly as possible to allow upstream operators and service companies to operate in a safe, secure and operationally efficient manner.
Commenting on this, Stephen Kermah, CEO of Genesis, said:
“We need to be very deliberate about infrastructure development if we truly intend to give meaning to the idea of enhancing local content in Ghana’s oil and gas industry. For Genesis, this is central to our operations and business model.”
“This project will create a world class Ghanaian owned OCTG stockyard and oilfield logistics facility with the physical assets as well as systems and processes that enable Genesis to deliver support services in a manner that conforms to the stringent QHSE standards of the international oil industry.”
