News Release
8 October 2013 – Genesis Oil & Gas Services Ltd (“Genesis”), a wholly owned Ghanaian oilfield services company, and Vallourec & Mannesmann Tubes (“Vallourec”), world leader in seamless pipes and premium tubular solutions for the oil and gas industry, have kicked off their partnership with the Takoradi Polytechnic with a ‘Tubular Essentials’ training session held at the Jubilee Technical Training Centre (“JTTC”) between 1st and 3rd October.
The three day course, which covered all aspects of seamless pipes, premium connections and tubular services, was attended by 14 participants from Tullow Ghana Limited, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (“GNPC”), Takoradi Polytechnic and AOS Orwell Ghana Limited (“AOS”). The trainees included drilling and completion engineers, field services technicians, pipe yard superintendents and warehouse managers.
After three days of lectures at the JTTC, which is a modern technical training facility built by the Jubilee partners at the polytechnic, the participants had the opportunity to visit the API certified machine shop of AOS, where they watched pipe being threaded and got a first-hand view of an assembly make-up – i.e. separate joints of pipe being screwed together using an industrial torque machine, as done on oil rigs.
Enhancing Local Content
The ‘Tubular Essentials’ course, which will be run at the JTTC during each academic year from 2014, is only one aspect of the relationship that Genesis and Vallourec have developed with the Takoradi Polytechnic. This collaboration is aimed at rapidly developing human capacity for oil and gas applications, and also involves:
– Field work to be carried out at Genesis’ new OCTG stockyard and tubular services centre once the facility is complete;
– 3-month apprenticeships to be offered each year, comprising a six week placement with VMOG Ghana (the joint venture between Genesis and Vallourec), followed by a six week placement at one of Vallourec’s threading plants outside Ghana;
– Scholarships to be provided each year to students from the polytechnic and the JTTC.
Genesis and Vallourec recognize that training and capacity building are critical tools that should be used to enhance local content in Ghana’s oil and gas industry.
Commenting on this, Essie Anno-Sackey, Managing Director of VMOG Ghana, said:
“This ‘Tubular Essentials’ session, which is the first of its kind to be held at the JTTC since the centre was commissioned in July 2013, is a strong statement of intent from Genesis and Vallourec about their commitment to sustainable local content development in Ghana.”
